Review

DevelopmentPosted by Doomgriever Aug 07, 2017 22:15
Just wanted to share this review of This Strange Realm Of Mine.

It's really touching that someone spent so much time to write a review that long and well put. :)

http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198146674484/recommended/655730/

Also, very happy they seemed to have understood many of the underlying thoughts about the game itself!

Also, it has rained (finally) for the last couple of days now!

Over and out!

Hot Tofu Action

Now Listening to: Kirk Knight - Flexible

Status: Working 20-25% ish on 3DRPG. It's too damn hot / humid / bad air circulation to be able to work properly during days, so I mainly focus on working late evenings and nights. It's going fine, doing some small changes, re-write stuff. All in all I'm positive it's going to be a good change for the game. But in this pace, it's going to take forever!

Anyways: I fried some Tofu in super hot chili sauce, mixed with lettuce, tomatos, cucumber and made a spicy refreshing sallad (yeah you bet I drenched that shit in garlic dressing!). Chili works wonders on depression, highly recommend! smiley
The science: When the body tries to deal with the Capsaicin, it releases endorphins.
The Pseudo-Science: No pain no gain! ;) Get your ass out of that comfort-zone.

What else?: I googled some reviews for "This Strange Realm Of Mine". I was pleasantly surprised it had a mention in "Rock, Paper, Shotgun" and "Rely On Horror".
*Yay intensifies*

Where I live it's been a draught for weeks, groundwater reserves critical, no-watering-the-plants rules etc. Let there be rain again! No rain again? Oh no..

This Strange Realm Of Mine: Rat's Poem - May

I think I'll go watch some Taboo now. Tom Hardy is damn good in that show!
Also, have to catch up with the new Rick & Morty season!

Bye~

3DRPG and Re-Visiting Old Projects

DevelopmentPosted by Doomgriever Jul 31, 2017 02:57
Now Listening To: Brockhampton - Palace

3DRPG:

Randomly generated voxel RPG. Basically you create your character, visit towns to recruit and gear up, explore worldmap, hunt food / cook it, fight monsters and look for treasure. Simple, but it is broken up into several different types of gameplay parts, so there are many many systems running in the background (I'll get to this in a sec).

Reasons To Re-Visit:

Bugs: There are some bugs and finding them is hard since I havn't touched the game in a year or two.

I had a bad HD crash where I lost the original, and the backup was 1 revision behind. So that was annoying.. Anyways.

User Friendly: The game is not user-friendly to PC gamers (Keyboard / Mouse). It's supposed to be played with controller, but even there some people had problems with **insert various different reasons**. And all of them are very valid (I'll also get to this in a sec). Also the Crafting menu and pretty much any menu are badly designed.

CPU Heavy: Want to cook eggs on your laptop? Now you can with this one simple trick, no V-sync and performance heavy game 3DRPG! "Tadaa!"

Unhappy With It: I feel the whole idea and concept of it is... lacking? I need to re-think this.

Other reasons: Probably a ton of other reasons that I can't think of right now.

Problematics:

Are you developing a game? If so, you might know how hard it is to get back into a project you've created years ago. For reasons like: you've grown as a programmer, software updates, you no longer have the projects code freshly in your memory. (If not, don't worry, just think of going back to school to do that history test you did as a 10yo. You're screwed if you're like me and have long since shredded any information I managed to cram into my head).

Unity: Has updated several times since the original release. Is this bad? Not at all, but it means some additional work. Old defunct features are gone, new ones to replace them. Etc.

Motivation:
Hehe. No for real. It took me a long time to muster courage enough to even take a look at "How bad is it? How much work? CAN I fix this? Is it worth it?" so on and yada-yada.

Re-Design: If I choose to re-design the majority of the game. It's going to take a while to get things up and running.. I don't even know where to begin really. I've started with the controls atleast. You have controls of a standard 3rd Person game, also in 1st Person you can actually look with your mouse ("Whaaaat?" *Mind-Blown* - Indeed.. It was because I played with controller before, and mouse was an afterthought).

Other:

Ok so a few things before wrapping up. I did play the game recently. And as I've forgotten HOW to play it, I found it frustrating and annoying, unintuitive, you name it.

This is an issue that I at the time didn't notice as I got so used to play it "the correct way" (my way). But people were right, the game is clunky and controls are bad. I'll fix this.

Release:

Just kidding. Not even gonna talk release other than "autumn". It depends really on how deep this patchwork is gonna get. I havn't decided yet. But atleast I'll make sure this goddamn game is userfriendly, mouse-accessible, doesn't turn your PC into a bucket of lava and sooo on.

Phew. That was a lot of text. I'm off to bed (Hah who am I kidding?). I'm probably gonna watch GoT and try to ignore the looming anxiety that has creeped up on me this past days. (¬、¬)

Bad Anxiety

MindPosted by Doomgriever Jul 31, 2017 02:21
Now Listening to: Kendrick Lamar - PRIDE

Intro:

Darkness is looming again. I love summer, but I hate the feeling of dread I get late in summer. It's pitch-black outside, autumn is slowly creeping in. With autumn comes darkness, cold, windy rainy days, and then my least desired time of the year, winter (which lasts for what feels like atleast ½ a year).

"But it's August, not even close to winter?" - That's what I'd like to feel, but the lump in the throat and deep-rooted feeling of anxiety is very convincing of the opposite.

GAD:

GAD or Generalized Anxiety Disorder ( https://www.helpguide.org/articles/anxiety/generalized-anxiety-disorder-gad.htm ), is a more or less constant feeling of anxiety, not connected to something specific. I'm medicated with SSRIs and helps (a lot) but I don't want to go too high in dosage as I feel claustrophobic by it's effect. So every now and then the anxiety spills over, especially during autumn / winter. Not so much during spring and early summer *So I Got That Goin For Me Which Is Nice - Meme*

Other:

I don't know. I've slowly started to work again, but I'll update that in another post.

Ok I finally looked at some Steam Reviews

DevelopmentPosted by Doomgriever Jul 27, 2017 22:51
It's all positive so far! What a relief! This one is touching and I think I'll print it out and frame it! Heck even get it on a t-shirt! smiley

REALM released on Steam and what it means to me..

DevelopmentPosted by Doomgriever Jul 27, 2017 18:56
Now Listening to: Joey Bada$$ - For My People

http://store.steampowered.com/app/655730/

Interlude:

If you are like me and live under a rock, you might have missed that "REALM" was released the 19th of July 2017. So a week ago. \o / ("What is REALM?" ^ check link above)

This is my 4th game on Steam, and definitely the game I'm most proud of. Developing games solo is HARD, or well developing games is hard in general, solo or not. So many details, so much to keep track of, so much that can go wrong if the player behaves unexpectedly. But hey, in the end REALM became a pretty solid game imo. Compared to *cough* 3DRPG *cough*. (Yes I'm working on a major patch for 3DRPG don't worry it'll be out towards autumn sometime.)

Development:

Started in August 2016 sometime after "Oh No! Bugs!" was released. Development ended sometime in July 2017. So it took 11 months roughly. No vacation, many nights spent working on REALM instead of sleeping, which is ok, I'm a night-owl, always have been / always will be. However, during the winter half-year I usually go down to 25%-50% in work-load, as I get pretty anxious / depression during this period. I have to focus on staying alive yo!

The game is made using Unity. Now this is acutally my 3rd Unity game (3DRPG, Oh No! Bugs!, REALM). So I'm starting to get the hang of it. Why Unity? I came from Flash (Koala Kids), and Flash is pretty much dead at this point (RIP). Flash script-language is AS3, which is pretty close to Unity's C#. So it was an easy transition. But learning a new Engine is no easy task. It takes a while to get used to everything (hence the messy 3DRPG sorry about that).

Art:

Pixel art is made using "Aseprite" check it out on Steam, it's good.

3D-Models are made using "ProBuilder" found in Unity Assetstore. Yes it costs money, no it's not the best tool out there. BUT you build things IN Unity which is really nice compared to an external 3D modelling tool (for me, not for everyone, I'm no modeller and it lacks features compared to Maya etc).

Music:

Music is made using Cubase. I've made game-music for my game projects (non-released and released) since like 2002 I think, under the name "False Intentions". Also at 2009 I started to make electronic music (separate from game music) under the name Encaved (hence @encaved on Twitter). In REALM you might notice in the OST that both False Intentions and Encaved are present. They are similar but different in styles (??), representing the dark / light parts of the game.. Not gonna go too deep into the artsy-fartsy parts of this right now.

Reception and Advertisement:

This is the worst part about making games (or any other art project that needs to get attention), you need to advertise. Post it everywhere, to everyone, hope someone will review it (good or bad).

As I suffer from pretty bad anxiety, this is hard for me. As much as I want people to play and experience the game, I don't want to shove it in peoples faces. But it's a tough market and you just have to, if you want to survive (read: be able to feed my two cats!).

Also, I typically go into a post-release-depression, feeling empty, feeling purposless, feeling disassociated from the project. I cannot read reviews, answer peoples questions for a while after release (I try but it's really hard!).

Quick How To Advertise:
- Post in relevant FB Groups
- Make twitter posts with relevant #
- Gather list of YouTubers and write them a mail
- Gather list of Magazines and write to them as well
- Setup Presskit() so it's easy for press to get necessary info and pictures
- Setup Keymailer so you can send out keys safely
- Pray someone will noti- what? This doesn't work? Oh.. Ok scratch that last part!
- Give keys to people who promise reviews or giveawa- Huh? Not that either? Well damn..

End Thoughts:

This project means alot to me. I feel like I managed to write down some of my more "deep" thoughts about life, death, fears, social-anxiety, you-name-it. And hopefully people will "enjoy" that, or learn something and so on. It was fun to work on, but I'm so glad it's over and I can finally focus on something more colorful and happy!

What the future hold:

Who knows? ;)
I'm actually working on 3DRPG again, a patch that will do a big overhaul of systems and controls etc. Make it userfriendly etc. After that MOAR games! (I have a plethora of game-ideas that I need to develop and release. Problem is choosing which one to do first, it takes year(s) after all.. )

That's all folks! Thanks for staying with me for so long!
